Pilgrim Academy offers individual and small group academic instruction within a therapeutic environment. Students are offered the opportunity for psychological and personal growth and academic success.

Pilgrim Academy believes that the student's behavior and underlying emotional issues must be actively and consistently addressed. Group and individual counseling services are provided for all students on a schedule consistent with their needs. Within this framework students are expected to maintain or re-establish normal adolescent responsibilities such as regular school attendance, appropriate behavior, effective interpersonal skills, and completion of schoolwork.

Pilgrim Academy provides an academic curriculum consistent with the Department of Education state mandated curriculum frameworks. The curriculum is individualized to meet each student's needs as outlined in his/her Individualized Education Program (IEP). All classes and classroom activities occur in small groups and within the therapeutic milieu. Pilgrim Academy seeks to create an educational experience that prepares students to succeed in school and to successfully understand and navigate the world outside of school.

The Academy uses a structured behavior management system through which preferred and improved behavior is acknowledged and highlighted and nurtured. Students receive ongoing behavioral and therapeutic feedback throughout all aspects of the school day. Within this model, the behavior management component serves as an instructional tool. A high staff to student ratio is provided in order to enhance academic success and to maintain clear and consistent expectations. Pilgrim Academy seeks to maintain a school environment based upon mutual trust and respect.

Counseling services are provided to assist students in identifying and countering the problems that are disrupting their educational and personal success. These services are designed to supplement, not replace, more intensive outpatient therapy, which most student both need and receive.

Student progress is more evident when families are involved. Parents are vital to the learning process. We welcome and encourage extensive family involvement. Parent and family support is provided and designed to allow parents to actively participate in the educational and therapeutic process utilizing their unique knowledge of the problems affecting their child.
