Summer Program (Extended School Year)
The Pilgrim Collaborative provides an extended school year program during
the summer months for the Learning Skills, Developmental Skills, Transitional Skills, and
Pilgrim Academy Programs. Many students continue PAC services from their 10-month school
program, but students do not need to be enrolled in PAC programs in order to be eligible to
attend summer session. However, all students enrolled in PAC summer programs must be referred
for services through the Special Education Director of their respective home school district.
The Pilgrim Academy Summer Session is designed to offer students academic support in order to
maintain learned skills. The Academy Summer Program is scheduled for five weeks beginning in
early July and ending in mid-August. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 8:00 -
11:30 AM. Summer classes are located at the Pilgrim Academy in Plymouth and are staffed by
Academy teachers, paraprofessionals and counselors.
The PAC summer program for Learning Skills, Developmental Skills and Transitional Skills classes is
also a five-week program scheduled from early July through mid August. Program hours are 8:00 AM
to 1:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Program classes are located in member district schools and are
staffed by special and general education teachers, nurses, therapists and paraprofessionals.
The curriculum for the PAC Summer Programs focuses on structured academics, communication, fine
and gross motor skills and social activities which enable students to practice and maintain
learned skills. Using "summer themes," the daily routines and learning activities from the
school year are closely followed. Familiar teachers from the school-year programs provide
summer staff with information geared to prioritizing goals and objectives, which are targeted
for reinforcement during the summer session. The PAC Summer Program maintains students
therapy services in speech & language, occupational therapy and/or physical therapy through
small group, class group or consultation delivery models.
Each Summer Program class is offered opportunities for trips into the community such as the zoo,
museums and other places of local interest. Classes also participate in either swimming trips
at area ponds and beaches or water play activities. All trips in the community are well
supervised by teachers, therapists and paraprofessionals. All classes participate in art and
music activities during the week as well. Community trips and activities provide opportunities
to reinforce and enhance students skills in the areas of cognition, behavior, communication
and social emotional growth.
During the final week of the summer session in mid August, the staff members plan special
activities to help celebrate the conclusion of the summer program. Games, outdoor activities,
special snacks and artwork exhibits are some examples. At the conclusion of the Summer
Program, teachers and therapists write summer updates that summarize each student's
achievements during the five-week session, which are shared with the school year teachers.
